Marty, I just cancelled my pet insurance, which was only on my dogs, they don't insure parrots...yet.

I have taken such good care of my dogs that the older two are almost 15, thus exceeding the average life span for their breed. The younger dogs are 5 years old (Clare) and 9 months (Johnny).

The costs of medical care for animals is over the moon these days, because it has advanced so far (do you really think your wife is going to let your dogs die young?). My two older dogs suffer from an ailment that is common in small dogs, a collapsing trachea. One of them is on 4 meds because he has other ailments too. The senior dogs eat one kind of food, the younger dogs eat another. I have tooth brushes for teeth cleaning, and they eat Greenies which help keep their teeth clean as treats. However, I have their teeth cleaned by the dentist about every two years.

They do not eat gourmet foods because they are bad for the dog (weight gain), nor do they have doggie day care (I take care of them). They do get Glucosamine supplements and the baby gets vitamins. My granddaughter Joy comes over and walks them. Joy is also president of her class, on the school newspaper and year book staffs and plays on 3 varsity teams at George Mason High School in Falls Church, so she is no slouch.

I heve them groomed every 5 weeks because they are Pomeranians, and have very long hair as well as fur (they love cold weather). My neighbor is visited by a huge van on wheels which contains a spa for dog grooming, but I drive over to Alexandria to 'For Pet's Sake.'

AS far as names go, my older male dog is Max, which is the most popular dog's name in the world, however in his case it is a joke, because his name is 'Maximus Ursus.' His dad was named bear, but Max is less than fifteen pounds in weight. The older girl is Peaches, because she looked like one when she was a puppy. The 5-year old girl, Clare, is named for Clare Schumann, the composer because my friend who got her brother named him Puccini. Our youngest puppy is named for Johnny Cash because he is mostly dressed in black (my son John thinks I named the dog for him, but I never called him Johnny, and my son John is named for John Kennedy, like many boys his age).

Am I victim of marketing ploys? I think not. I am just another nutty dog lover who would rather take care of her pets than travel. I am happy you have two new dogs. Never forget the multiplier effect. Every dollar spent goes out into the economy. MIne goes to people who help me with my pets. Dianne

Marty, PS. A Republican from Indiana, I believe, has introduced a bill to allow taxpayers to claim their dogs as dependents. I am all for that.

Did anyone see this week's Mad Men with the dog focus group? "Oh God they are describing themselves!" one of the ad men proclaims. That is what we do with our pets the poor little things. They have become another way to proclaim to the world who we are and what we're about. Your dog is named Tinkerbell with a pink bedazzled collar, I know something about you. Your dog is a Lab chewing on a "Life is Good" frisbee, I know something about you. Our consumer culture requires ever expanding markets and the pet market certainly is expanding.

An interesting study would be how other countries with a large pet culture behave. In my experience Germans are crazy about their dogs, but not in the American way. To my knowledge a store like PetsMart doesn't exist there. They don't do cats so much...a tour book we had said Germans consider people who own cats to be communists!

As Madileine Rhue said in Blazing Saddles, "It's twoo, its twoo." MY uber-liberal neighbors all have cats, and to my horror, they let them run loose. (The cats love the friable soil in my garden beds, and they kill song birds...UCK!!)
